About Grade 1
The progression from pre-school to Grade 1 is a major milestone for most children and you will be finding your 6-7 year old’s development is full of opposites: with them wanting increased independence in school, on play-dates and birthday parties but also wanting increased re-assurance as they take their first steps into the world of bigger children.

Let us help you. Together we can develop the full intelligence, personality and potential of children and let our students unleash their creative power and innovative potential.
Your 6-7 year old
The first steps into Primary school
This rapidly developing age is when children need loving guidance.
At around the ages of 6-7 children typically develop rapidly with increasing height, better coordination, athleticism and also locomotor skills such as running, jumping and catching a ball. They have a lot of energy and physical activity is very important to healthy development. It is for this reason that our program is carefully calibrated to allow for shorter theory sessions and plenty of revision breaks so children have time to play in-doors and also be active outdoors.

Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills too improve such as writing and drawing, tying shoelaces, buttoning shirts. This is a good time to encourage these activities, but its very important not to compare your little one to other children as around this age different children develop at different rates. This is why we have in-built flexibility in our program so that you can choose which sessions to do at your own pace.
6-7 Year Old
Emotional Development
Emotional development markedly increases as children at this age tend to become more aware of their feelings and the feelings of others and have more self-control. As they develop complex friendships and become increasing independent within the family unit it is very important to give them the time and routine to think through these feelings. The ROK Learning Intra-cerebral and Emotions program has a whole Thinking Field dedicated to the thoughts and emotions that children experience everyday.

Social Development
Social development is another area that increases as children begin to place great value on their friendships and want to be liked for their personalities and their talents. Even if you are home-schooling it is important to let children regularly meet peers so they can learn to share, play and also learn to constructively work through any arguments that may arise.
Cognitive Development
Cognitive development means by the time children are 6-7 year olds they are typically capable of much more complex thoughts with longer attention spans than during their pre-school years. As their reasoning and logic skills grow they think before making decisions and learn from what they read and hear. This, however, is just the beginning and you’ll often find children want to do everything at once and will have difficulty making choices in their excitement. Typically by the end of the first grade children can read sight words and sound out other words, can tell the time and think about months and years, recognise patterns, count and recognize from 0-100 and do basic addition and subtraction. Our program gently gives more complicated projects and tasks as their cognitive skills develop through the year.
